Two years ago, I was hired to lead what would become The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Black culture brand.

Since launching our free membership model, with the work of our dedicated team, we’ve gone from zero to almost 40,000 UATL members.

We owe a great deal of gratitude to those of you who’ve signed up and supported us so far. You’ve read our stories, online and in the printed newspaper, including brilliant series like “Atlanta: America’s Black mecca?” and 404ward.

Along the way you’ve shared your thoughts and stories with us, always keeping us honest and letting us know if we’re keeping our promise to cover Black culture thoughtfully and fearlessly.

Tens of thousands of you are subscribers to our newsletter, where we highlight the best work from our team of reporters each week. You’ve shared our stories around social media, from Instagram to TikTok, Facebook, Threads and elsewhere, sliding into our DMs to give us story tips, tagging us in your posts and commenting to let us know you’re enjoying the content across platforms.

You’ve also made our live events into success stories.

Maybe you’ve joined us at one of our Black Culture Movie Nights, starting in March 2024 when we screened “ATL” and interviewed producer Dallas Austin, through our November event where we watched Spike Lee’s “School Daze” with Jasmine Guy, Kyme and Otis Sallid. You might even have snagged tickets to tonight’s screening of “Hustle & Flow” at Tara Theatre before they sold out (if not, don’t worry; another screening is coming soon).

Then, earlier this year, there was Culture Connect, our live event where we turned UATL’s reporting on corporate DEI backlash and the Black consumer boycott of Target into a community conversation about Black entrepreneurship at the Thompson Atlanta-Buckhead hotel.

We knew there was an audience for our work, because we know Atlanta is a city with universal representation of the Black cultural experience. We also know where to find the stories, thanks to our brilliant staff members who are actively engaged with what happens inside and outside the city in our community.

Today, I’m here to ask you to join us as we begin the next episode of UATL. We’re introducing a new level of membership: the UATL supporting member.

For only $5 a month, or $49 a year, you’ll help us expand our efforts even further. That means more reporting, more events, more interactions, more partnerships and membership perks, and most importantly more opportunity to help us build the future of UATL.

Our community has grown because we’ve been supported. That’s not something we take for granted; it’s something for which we are deeply grateful. Covering Black culture from Atlanta is a privilege and a responsibility.

I’m very proud of what we’ve built together. And just as we couldn’t have done it without you, we’ll need your support to take UATL to the next level.
