How the Nature Gurlz are reclaiming history through healing walks
Once a Civil War battleground where Confederates fought to defend slavery, Cascade Springs Nature Preserve has transformed into a space for healing, community and empowerment. The Nature Gurlz, a group of over 100 Black women of all ages, regularly walk this trail, reclaiming space and history through movement, conversation and unity. What started in 2020 as a way to cope with pandemic stress has grown into a strong network of educators, lawyers, doctors and more. As they walk, they reflect, pray, debate politics and stay connected to their shared legacy. With their growing influence even attracting Atlanta’s top political leaders, the Nature Gurlz are showing that walking with purpose can do more than change lives; it can shape the future.
