Juneteenth isn't just a holiday. It's a declaration of Black joy.

Four years after Juneteenth became a federal holiday, the idea of Black joy is taking on new urgency. The holiday, which commemorates the ending of slavery in the U.S., has transformed into a form of protest, therapy, political power — and resistance. Celebrating and honoring the past is increasingly a comfort for Black people as the U.S. government dismantles DEI programs, attempts to rewrite history and criminalizes people based on their identity. The AJC's Ernie Suggs takes us to an Atlanta dance floor and homemade garden to show how Black joy serves people from all walks of life as an antidote for tumultuous times.
