Atlanta’s Black queer history and future: A conversation with Angela Denise Davis
In this episode of "It's UATL," the AJC continues its exploration of Atlanta’s reputation as a “Black mecca” with Angela Denise Davis, creative director of Zami NOBLA: The National Organization of Black Lesbians on Aging. Zami NOBLA serves as a cultural home for Black lesbian feminists 40 and older, dedicated to celebrating and preserving their stories through community, art and activism. Davis reflects on Atlanta’s powerful Black queer history and warns against complacency, reminding us that while Atlanta thrives as a beacon of freedom and visibility, many in rural Georgia still lack access to that same sense of belonging. She challenges listeners to help carry Atlanta’s light, love and joy beyond the city limits.
